New electricity rates in 2020. What will the new bill be like?

New electricity rates in 2020. What will the new bill be like?

Due to Circular 3/2020, which sets out the methodology for calculating electricity transmission and distribution tolls, a number of changes are established which will have an impact on our electricity bills. The changes in the pricing will take effect on January 25, 2020, however they set a period of transmission until November 1, 2020.

- The 2.0A / DHA and 2.1A / DHA rates with contracted power equal to or less than 15 kW will be renamed as 2.0TD.

- The 3.0A rate with contracted power higher than 15 kW will be renamed as 3.0TD.

2.0DT rate

All rates 2.0 and 2.1 with contracted power equal to or less than 15 kW, currently have 1 or two periods in energy (depending on whether it is a rate with or without time discrimination) and only one in power.

However, according to Circular 3/2020, these rates will be renamed as 2.0TD. The main changes in this rate are:

- They pass to 3 periods of energy.

  • - They become 3 periods of energy.
  • - They become  2 periods of power.
  • - The current time discrimination disappears.

The consumer will have the right to adapt the contracted powers by hourly period defined in the Circular in a completely free process, regardless of whether he had made a power change in the previous 12 months.

Changes in time periods

Time Discrimination in power

As a novelty, the Circular introduces the possibility of the consumer to choose two powers throughout the day. However, there are two possibilities:

a. You can choose the same power throughout the day.

b. You can choose two different powers for the Peak's hours (P1) and Valley's hours (P3). Peak's hours (P1) cover from 8h to 24h on business days (Monday to Friday); on the other hand, Valley's hours (P3) cover the rest of the business days, including weekends and holidays.

Time Discrimination in Energy

Currently, the 2.0DHA and 2.1DHA rates are divided into two periods with two different prices. The following graph shows the two current periods, the inner circle being the summer time discrimination and the outer, the winter time discrimination.

The Circular introduce three time periods in energy:

- Peak (P1): 10h - 14h, 18h - 22h

- Flat (P2): 8h - 10h, 14h - 18h, 22h - 24h

- Valley (P3): weekends, holidays and from 24h to 8h on business days

The periods P1 and P2 in energy coincide with the peak's hours in the power; the P3 period in energy, with the valley's hours in power.

3.0DT rate

The 3.0A rate with contracted power higher than 15 kW will be renamed as 3.0TD.

The time discrimination of 3 periods will become 6 periods (in power and energy), and instead of dividing the year into two seasons (winter and summer), the different months of one year will be divided into 4 seasons:

1. High season: January, February, July, December.

- Peak (P1): 9h - 14h, 18h - 22h

- Flat (P2): 8h - 9h, 14h - 18h, 22h - 24h

- Valley (P6): 24h - 8h

2. Mid-high season: March, November.

- Peak (P2): 9h - 14h, 18h - 22h

- Flat (P3): 8h - 9h, 14h - 18h, 22h - 24h

- Valley (P6): 24h - 8h

3. Mid-low season: June, August, September.

- Peak (P3): 9h - 14h, 18h - 22h

- Flat (P4): 8h - 9h, 14h - 18h, 22h - 24h

- Valley (P6): 24h - 8h

4. Low season: April, May, October.

- Peak (P4): 9h - 14h, 18h - 22h

- Flat (P5): 8h - 9h, 14h - 18h, 22h - 24h

- Valley (P6): 24h - 8h

If we put together these 4 graphs, there is a graph like the following:
